Development Program

Introduction

The Namibia Junior Golf Foundation has taken a very proactive role by initiating a golf development program in Namibia. The foundation, founded in 1997 had various programs that ran since its inception. As with any program their were shortcomings and related problems - the single biggest, being funding.

Goals

To increase the number of particiapants in golf to reflect the demographics of Namibia. This will be critical to the future success of the sport into national teams, both junior and senior, and professional players in respect of normalization, integration and representation

The Namibia Junior Golf Foundation also gives youths, especially those from underprivileged and previously disadvantaged communities, the opportunity to develop themselves through the game. Golf will open windows of opportunities to help the youths escape from harsher environments. Success stories from the feeder programs will inspire others, thereby developing the game further and wider.

The Way Forward

To effectively manage & develop junior golf in Namibia, we have decided to restructure the Foundation, thereby enabling us to direct and focus our efforts, attention and resources to the benefit of junior golf in Namibia.

We are trying to establish 4 tiers of development, thereby giving junior golfers opportunity to set goals and grow within the new structures. We are of the opinion that the proposed model is viable and it is our intention to create and establish a development model which can be implemented by other sport codes in Namibia.

o    Kiddies Golf Namibia (Feeder source)
o    Make Things Happen ( Development Tournaments)
·         Tour Cup Tier
·         National Tier
·         Golf Academy (Long term goal)

New Structures

Development tier (Grassroots Development)

Children from all walks of life that joins the Kiddies Golf Namibia and Make things happen programs. Our intention is to have these events at schools, parks where ever we can find space to allow kids to hit a couple of balls. This will then be developed into a more formal process where we intend to host sponsored events where we can get the kids to have fun but at the same time learn the corporate values created by golf

Junior Cup Tier (Junior Golf Development)

This tier will represent juniors who have developed their game to the extent that they have sufficient knowledge of rules, etiquette and skills to play in our tour cup events. We have decided to reduce the number of events from the previous year to 4. We believe it will better to have less with more focus on numbers. Imperative to remember though, at this stage children must be official members of a golf club in Namibia.

National Tier (Junior Golf Development)

This tier will represent those juniors that have sufficiently managed the game allowing them to participate on national level. They must actively participate in the Triangular events we plan to host together with the Tour Cup events and they should also play the Namibian Amateur Golf Union & Junior Open tournaments for purposes of earning merits points on the Namibia Junior Golf Foundation Merit List for selection of national teams.
